The national flag of Algeria has two equal vertical bands of green and white with a red crescent and a smaller, red, five-pointed star at the center of the flag. The crescent and star, and the color green are traditional symbols of Islam (which is the official religion of Algeria). The color white symbolizes purity. The Algerian flag was adopted on July 3, 1962, after the country became independent from France.
